UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Changes
From 25 February 2026, the UK will fully enforce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. Anyone travelling to the UK without a valid ETA, including HGV drivers and transport operators, may be refused travel or denied entry.
This marks a significant change for international freight movements into the UK.
An ETA is a digital travel authorisation, linked electronically to a traveller’s passport. It is not a visa, but it must be obtained before travel.
ETAs typically allow short stays in the UK (up to 6 months) and are valid for multiple entries, lasting up to two years (or until passport expiry).
Who Needs an ETA?
From 25 February 2026, an ETA will be required for most non-UK and non-Irish nationals who do not already hold a UK visa. This includes:
- HGV drivers entering the UK
- Transport and logistics personnel
- Business visitors travelling visa-free
Anyone without a valid ETA may not be allowed to board ferries, trains, or flights bound for the UK.
For freight forwarders and importers, this introduces new operational considerations:
- Advance planning is essential: Drivers must have ETAs approved before travel.
- Risk of delays: Missing documentation could result in missed sailings or refused boarding.
- Carrier checks: Transport operators will be required to verify ETA compliance.
- Customer communication: Shippers should ensure drivers are informed early to avoid disruption.
While the ETA process itself is straightforward, timing and compliance will be critical to maintaining smooth supply chains.
In Summary
The UK ETA scheme adds a new compliance step for international freight movement. Businesses that plan ahead and integrate ETA checks into their logistics processes will reduce the risk of delays and disruption from 25 February 2026 onwards.
